Maybe Mother Nature isn't too happy that the climate conference participants in Bali, Indonesia couldn't arrange a video conference instead of flying across the world to let out a lot of hot air. A 5.4-magnitude earthquake hit the island of Bali last Friday. There were no damages to the hotels where participants are staying though, so perhaps it was a warning shot.

According to this estimate from Bloomberg, the conference will generate as much pollution as 20,350 cars used for a year. So where are these people staying? At eco-lodges using gray water for irrigation of the landscaping? At bungalows made of bamboo and other natural materials, powered by solar? Ummm, no.

With some 15,000 delegates attending (some arriving by private jet), most are staying at the biggest, brashest hotels on the island, located in the Nusa Dua area. The names kind of give it away: Grand Mirage Resort, Swiss Grand Bali, Melia Bali Villas & Spa Resort, Nikko Bali Resort & Spa, Grand Hyatt Bali, and others that certainly did not have the word "energy efficient" in their business plan. According to the Telegraph, they're not above a little price gouging either:

Hotels, many of which fall into the bracket of some of the most luxurious in the world, have spotted the chance to charge accordingly, with many saying accommodation is only available now at around £400 to £500 a night for a small single room.

Japanese and Australian couples are known to prefer Alam Kul Kul rather than the larger hotels. Alam Kul Kul also have world-class spa facilities with soothing massages.

Staff Friendliness:
I'll say that the staffs are really polite, attentive and always sensitive to our needs. They will always be staffs standing to attention at the entrance of the Spa and Hotel itself. Restaurant servers seems friendly and relaxed while the housekeeping staffs always do what they're good at with great pride and service.

Alam Kul Kul Boutique Resort is a 4star boutique resort that offers a very compact, clean and well taken care of resort that really enable you to de-stress and unwind. The hotel's in-house restaurant is an award-winning restaurant with beautiful views of the beach. The spa and massage is also an award-winning spa which is Jamu Traditional Spa. There are 2 swimming pool and a complete Business Center. The resort have 80 rooms 4 categories of room with 3 types of villas. Rooms are all air-conditioned, comfortable spring beds with hot water, bath tub and cable TV. Wireless Internet is also installed and provided for free. The villas come with personal plunge pool and a sunken bath tub.

How do the rooms feel:
The rooms are very clean and well looked after. Beds are large with elegant and nice-smelling quilts and covers. Plenty of Balinese and Javanese design elements ranging from natural roofs on the villas, to traditional crafts, furnitures, decoration and painting.

Noise levels:
Quiet and peaceful so you don't have to worry about annoying noises.

Proximity to the hotel:
Alam Kul Kul Boutique Resort is located at the top end of Jl. Pantai Kuta across from the beach. To get to the hotel from the airport takes about 20 minutes depending on traffic. Along the street are nightlife places such as Hard Rock Cafe, Hard Rock Hotel and Kama Sutra. There is also a 24 hours mini market called Circle K nearby. The Alam Kul Kul is situated very close to Kama Sutra and it's around the corners of Aussie friendly bars of Jl. Melasti such as Bali Rocks and Peanuts. They are within walking distance.

Overall, I'll recommend this hotel to everyone especially couples on honeymoon looking for a romantic and tranquil hotel. Love it and I'll surely stay in Alam Kul Kul again soon.

Over the years much has been written about the Bali Beach Hotel, the island’s first 5-star property that opened in 1965 marking a new era in tourism. Funded primarily by reparation monies from Japan in lieu of damage caused by their occupation during World War II, the hotel stands majestically on the Sanur beachfront. Dominating the landscape, the Bali Beach Hotel is the island’s tallest building and was established at a time when Indonesia was attempting to modernize itself and incorporate western trends into local design principles. However, the Balinese government soon made a ruling that no structural dwelling was to exceed the height of a fully grown coconut palm in order to appease the Hindu community and above all show respect for the Gods.

During the early construction of the Bali Beach Hotel, Indonesia’s current president, Bapak Soekarno, a firm believer in spirituality and the supernatural, made the promise that he would set aside one room for the exclusive use of the Goddess of the South Sea. Unfortunately, before the hotel was complete his government was overthrown by opposing military forces and the pledge to set aside one room was never fulfilled.

In January 1993 following almost 30 years of welcoming visiting international dignitaries and heads of state, the main lobby of the Bali Beach Hotel and the surrounding ten-storey’s were destroyed in a devastating fire. Flames leapt from every window and a thick black smoke enveloped the entire village of Sanur. All hotel guests’ and employees managed to escape the blaze and luckily there were no injuries or loss of life. Miraculously one room survived the intensity of the fire and apart from a little smoke damage; the entire twin-share suite remained intact. The fate of room 327 remains a mysterious phenomenon, although numerous hotel staff and local priests believe that the Goddess of the South Sea reclaimed her ocean view suite and saved it from destruction.

Continuing the amazing history behind the Bali Beach Hotel, it is said that no set of architectural plans existed for the refurbishment of the lobby and main tower that had been destroyed by the fire. Instead, local paranormals were guided by what they say was the spirit of the late President Sukarno. This higher force indicated that the reconstruction had to be completed in a period of only eight months and if this was fulfilled then the ongoing success of the hotel would be guaranteed. Over 2800 construction workers and craftsmen worked 24-hours a day to restore the Bali Beach Hotel to its former glory. The entire damaged wing was rebuilt and modernized using a blend of quality materials at such a speed that allowed the property to re-open in less than a year after the destructive blaze.
